The punctuation mark is also called a suspension point, points of ellipsis, periods of ellipsis, or colloquially, dot-dot-dot. An ellipsis is sometimes used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence.

It is called an ELLIPSIS, defined as "one or more words that are left out but obviously understood, but must be supplied to make a construction grammatically correct, and marked (as ...) indicating an omission or a pause."

You already have lots of answers, but I thought my two-cents worth should be included.
The ". . ." is called an, hmmm I forgot, but I remember that when I see it in a sentence like the following:
The batter stood at the plate, he saw the pitch, he took careful aim, he swung and . . .
Kinda leaves ya hangin' don't it?
Oh yeah, that's it, it is called a "hanger onner" cuz it leaves ya hangin'.
So tell your English professor that a new definition has been accepted for the . . . symbol, it is now officially termed "the hanger onner" previously known as an ellipsis.
;-)
