Poverty. People who have what they need to live a comfortable life rarely commit crime. Period.

1) People not being held accountable for their own actions. Everyone always wants to give some special circumstance or excuse that justifies their behavior. Even the answers to this question repeat many of those excuses.

All the poverty, social injustice, drugs, those aren't causes. Some may be symptoms, some may be linked, but they aren't causes. The cause of the most crime and violence in the US is that most people don't think they will have to take the consequences for their actions. Sadly, all too often, they are right.

Unhappiness lead to drugs, drugs lead to violence, violence leads to crimes, crimes lead to jail. After jail, people can't get a job so they are unhappy and they turn to drugs....

Unhappiness really is the only cause of crime and violence. I mean, everybody who commits a crime or is violent isn't happy about something.
