Hey wannabe ;)

I think the best thing to do is to meditate. Not conventional meditation, but get some really nice music without lyrics and relax and try to clear your thoughts.

Something else would be to keep a record of your dreams. Have a book beside your bed and think to yourself before you sleep that you're going to wake up to record your dreams.

You can see a pic of me on my profile. If you think you can hear someone or contact them by using something like a photo you can experiment on me.. Just make sure it's positive thoughts! lol

Note: I have had out of body experiences and other phenomena happen me while sleeping. For my sanity I put it down to lucid dreaming and sleep paralysis. You'll see I answered a question on this yesterday if you're looking for alternative explanations of your gift.

Cheers!

You can hear thought? No you can't. That is your imagination at best or a psychological pathology at worst.

You're good with tarot cards? No you aren't. Even true believers in tarot will tell you that the suggestions made are non-specific.

Try the online ESP experiments (i.e. dice-guessing game). Run 100 trials. I don't have ESP, but I predict you will fare no better than chance. If you do this enough times and examine the results you will be forced to do one of two things--either admit in light of the evidence that paranormal "gifts" do not exist, or else stick doggedly to your a priori belief that supernatural powers are (despite evidence to the contrary) fact.

Are you intellectually honest enough to admit the truth, or do you insist on deluding yourself indefinitely? I used to employ a much kinder approach, but I have seen too many instances of how the ignorant and superstitious beliefs in the paranormal can do damage.

There are accepted scientific methods for testing skills of all types.

If you want to test telepathy, you'll need some people to help you. Use a deck of cards to start. Have somebody shuffle the cards and look at the top card. Have them concentrate on the suit of the card. Guess the suit and record your guesses. If you do better than 1 out of 4, you're doing better than chance, but it doesn't "prove" your skills. Next, have your helper concentrate on the number of the card. If you guess better than 1 of 13 you're doing better than chance. Finally, have them concentrate on both the suit and number together. Chance says 1 of 52. None of this is proof, but it will give you a sense of how to experiment. Try to set it up where you can't see your helper and, obviously, can't see the cards. Use different people as helpers to try to avoid bias in the results.

Think you dream of future events? Keep a dream journal. Next to your bed, keep paper and pencil. Write down your dreams when you wake up. If you wake up during the night, try to write down your dreams then. It's harder than it sounds, but if you do it, and if you keep a detailed journal, you can compare your notes against current events. You may see patterns or matches between your journal and what is happenning. This is pretty difficult to prove, but you can again get a sense of what it's like to test your skills.

Regarding Tarot cards and sensing spirits, these are difficult to test since there is really no reliable external stimuli that you can test against. You need to use your intuition and trust your instincts.

Can you improve these skills? There are 4 skills involved here. First, you must recognize that there is something non-physical occuring. Second, you must be able to differentiate between these events and your thoughts or imagination. Third, you must be able to interpret the information that you are receiving. Forth, you must be able to express these skills in a way that they will be useful to you and others.

You seem to be able to recognize that something is happenning. Through testing and practice, you will begin to differentiate when the stimuli is coming from within you and when it is coming from outside of you. That will give you more control and make it easier to focus your energies. Those are the first steps to improving your skills. Good luck!

quite a few experiences, and I know people who have had similar experiences as me. My opinion is that they are caused by the dream mechanism in the brain. A chemical problem that is related to sleep deprivation, or heavy stress. I have done a lot of research and it seems most people who experience the most intriging shadow man experiences have similar stories. The man is walking down the hallway without noticing the person watching, or it comes face to face with the person and then disperses like it was made of gas. Ive experienced this a few times, and I myself am prone to sleep disorders. The experience is very similar to sleep paralysis, except without the paralysis. I used to believe they were actual spirits, but on researching stories, I found certain themes and events to be too close to other sleeping disorder symptoms. edit: notice that its also quite common to see shadow men and shadow animals in the road when driving through the night and lacking sleep. I used to travel all over for work, and I almost went off the road a number of time thinking there was someone in the middle of an empty interstate.

I read several of the other answers before I decided to add my 2 cents-sense in....

Here's how my answer goes =
Paranormal translates out to: that which is beyond normal.
"Normal" ... therein lies a whole other dilemma. It used to be that people were ridiculed, even killed for professing to believe that the world was NOT flat. Back then, it was considered 'paranormal' or 'beyond normal' to believe, say, that the world was round. As conventional wisdom grew, from our increased/factual perspectives, it proved out that indeed, the world was round!

I believe that you will find help in the two books referenced in answer from Mr. Weaver/psiexploration. Like most everything, practice and focus will reveal if there is true strength in your gifts and to what extent you are willing to explore and pursue them. Take caution, always, in who and what you allow to teach and/or guide you. You can see, by the market difference in the answers you have received, that there are many "opinions" out there.

From me to you: May God bless and keep you in your search and white light upon you always and in all ways.

Record all that u can and write how u r feeling during the times of sensing things so u can learn how that feeling really feels.I believe if u can harness that feeling it will grow and strengthen.

many people convince themselves that they have paranormal gifts, but nobody has yet been able to demonstrate any paranormal gifts in a controlled enviroment. The people you see in shows are doing magic tricks, even John Edward and Sylvia Brownes psychic abilities are a popular magic trick known as cold reading.
Sylvia Browne has even accepted a challenge to prove her abilities in a controlled enviroment 4 years ago, but has yet to clear one day in her busy schedule to show the world that she is for real. Which indicates, that she knows she is not for real.

I am sorry if you were looking for a more exciting and magical answer, but you said mature answers only. This is the mature answer.

First off, calm down. The answer I am to give you is this: Stay away from the tarot cards if at all not 100 percent sober. [I am only the messengar]. Having dreams that come tru is considered a form of prophey, that goes away with age. [innocence lost] Same with astral projection. Please protect your self with a cocoon of white lite. Very important. Seek out a know shaman. There is one in Sedona Arizona, most of the best live there. It is dry, which makes it more unemotional, as opposed to living by water, I cry a lot. lol. Have been reading some advice to read up on this. If you have any true inate abilities, you won't really have to read up on much of this. It is better to find someone ready to take you on, and nuture these talents. My husband always asks me, how come, if you are clairvoyant, you have to ask someone's name, and aren't rich? Believe it or not, that question just amuses me and shows just how much ignorance there is out there. He tolerates me. lol. Good luck on your journey. Decided not to give out the healer's e-mail due to some of the useless hostilitly directed into the air. You will find her. She is Mayan

There are two excellent books on this subjects:

1. "Guidelines for Testing Psychic Claimants" by Richard
Wiseman and Robert Morris

2. "Test Your Psychic Powers" by Susan Blackmore

Also the web site for the Parapsychological Association
http://www.parapsych.org has links to psi games which test for certain abilities.

FYI: You can't test for paranormal gifts because the term covers too many things. You can test for future events (like choosing a card before the card is selected by a computer) and other specific abilities.
I suggest you read some of the free online articles to see how they conduct some of the testing.

>How can I figure out if I have any paranormal gifts?

It's called 'logic'. The key is to look at the known scientific forces and notice that none of them support supernatural activity. Then you can quickly reason out that you do not have supernatural powers because no such powers exist.

Of course, you're probably going to ignore what I say and accuse me of being immature when I state these scientific facts, but that's up to you and it won't prevent me from stating them. I'm hoping, of course, that you will listen to me and understand what I'm saying.

>I can hear someones thoughts while they are sitting near me.

Hearing voices is not good. If you are hearing or seeing things which are not actually there, it may be advisable to see a psychiatrist, because generally leaving such things alone doesn't lead to anything good (I know this from personal experience).

>I am also good with tarot cards

No one is 'good' with tarot cards in the sense you're talking about. Different people have different levels of skill at convincing you that a random card means something to you, but none of them are seeing the future any more than anyone else. Tarot cards do not work, they tell your fortune just as well as, say, a cribbage hand would because the mechanics of card shuffling remain the same.
