What is "being cool"?
What is a "popular kid"?
What is meant by "hanging out"?

Once you have clear definitions, then find out if "hanging out with popular kids" -- at school or outside -- increases or decreases your coolness.

If you can, find a measurable function. Experiment to find out if the increase caused by avoiding popular kids outside school is sufficient to balance the decrease caused by kowtowing to them in school.

That, at least, would be a scientific approach towards answering your anxiety.

i would say that it makes you "fake", why not be yourself and hang out with your real friends at school and outside of school... they are the ones that are going to be around for you...

It makes you in the wrong section, obviously, so you can't be much of a nerd, so I'd say it makes you cool, because nobody likes nerds. :(
