I agree with Lollie.

We need to know what type of bug and in what type of tree. Generally, I do not recommend the use of insecticides at all because of the feeding chain. You could end up killing animals that eat the bugs you kill. Just as a matter of interest many indigenous plants are host to specific to very specialized browsers. We have trees that get defoliated by bugs every season or two. The scientific reason for this is that the tree relies on the herbivores to strengthen its root system. Instead of the energy always going to the leaves the roots will get the benefit if the leaves are eaten. Some trees send out a signal to herbivores to say: hey guys I am ready to be eaten but only so much and then the signal gets turned off or the leaves become unpalatable. It is marvelous how these things work. Is Nature not the greatest... we have so much to learn from her. So... please find out what you are about to kill first. If it is an alien bug I understand you sentiments... use a bug specific killing agent (if that really exists) or use something that will just put them off.

First you have to ID the bug to understand what it is doing on (hopefully not IN the tree). Some cause minimal damage that is mostly cosmetic. The tree can survive these "visitors" without a problem. Even insects that cause moderate damage may do so at a noncritical time of year.

Then the issue becomes, what chemical to use if something should be done. Often there are nontoxic solutions that don't poison you or the environment.

Get the bugs to the Extension Service in your county for ID and the agent will discuss treatment options.
