I don't have outlook set up and would prefer an alarm that will sound even if my laptop is shut (if this isn't possibl;e then any way of setting an alarm will help)

Get "Alarm Clock 1.0" from www.downloads.com. It is FREE and the Editors pick. The link is below. There are several free choices there including "Karen's" mentioned in another answer.

Download a free program Called KAREN'S COUNTDOWN TIMER.
You can set the alarms to play a sound and then get yourself a nice loud alarm clock sound.
