I like the Florida Gulf Coast and the Florida Keys. Avoid Clearwater Beach and St Pete's Beach though. It used to be beautiful, but now it is all 2 million dollar, high rise condo's. You have to walk miles to find a public accessway to the beach and the prices for meals and drinks have gone sky high.
That's if you can find an hotel there even, as even most of them have been converted into condo's.
The area's ruined.
But hey. that's the American way, money talks, the tourist's walk.

The Peak-to-Peak Highway in Colorado (CO-7) is an absolutely beautiful drive, presuming it'll be open by Easter. It's not open in the winter months due to heavy snows. It'll take you through Rocky Mountain National Park, and you'll have some views that are, in my opinion, unparallelled.
Another scenic drive that's fun would be to do a Route 66 drive (THE famous Route 66). It starts in Chicago Illinois and goes to the Santa Monica Pier in the Los Angeles, CA area. There are all kinds of books available with things to see and do along Route 66 (which inspired the recent Disney/Pixar "Cars" movie).
There's a couple of ideas.

Northern California has some nice places to see. The Bay area has a lot to do, shop, see some sites, you can drive down the coast on highway one, its one of the most beautiful scenic drives in th world. The Sierra Nevada's and gold country are quite nice with lots of little towns to visit, Yosemite, lake Tahoe, the wine country near Napa, these are all within driving distance of the bay area.
If your a country music fan then Nashville Tennessee and/or Branson Missouri, this area is pretty green year around.
Hawaii.
Try Florida without the theme parks, the Everglades and Keys are sights you might want to see, Miami, lots of Beach's and warm water.
Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Las Vegas.
Theres a lot to see in America.

If you want to go for scenery, the west coast is the only way to go and a car trip is the only way to see it. Might I suggest starting in San Francisco, California driving north. You will see the ocean pretty much the whole time, cliffs, and pine trees the whole way there. Also a drive along the Columbia river (the border of Washington and Oregon) and then end your trip in Seattle. The scenery is absolutely stunning.

-Great Smoky Mountains National Park is beautiful.
-San Francisco is amazing.
-Missouri is a great state for scenery. Many caves and the Ozark Mts.
-Go to Canada and check out the province of Quebec or see the Canadian Rockies.
-Hawaii!!!!
Overall, though, I would have to say the the Smokys are the best. (eastern Tennessee & Kentucky and western North Carolina.)

Utah has plenty of great parks and some unique countryside. I've spent three different vacations there, seeing different stuff.
Plenty of photos of that and other interesting sites below.

We went last year and I would recommend to anyone... San Fran to Yosemite national park, to Vegas, to palm springs, to San - Diego. You will see snow crested mountains to sun drenched desserts. It will leave you speechless.
