Although identity theft is on the rise and a serious event, chances are your wallet either will turn up or has been inadvertently buried in the local land fill. Go to the Social Security Office and request a replacement card, stop all your credit cards, put an alert on your credit report through Experian, Equifax or TransUnion. (You only have to do one, as they are all required to share that alert info with each other). Go to your local DMV and get a replacement driving permit. If you are an authorized user on a parents credit card, let them know you lost your wallet , when and where so they can put alerts on their credit reports as well. Be cautious leaving and returning to your home, be aware of your surroundings. If a deviant has your driver permit, he has your address as well, so just be careful.

Once you make a police report on the lost property you can then place and alert on any of the three major credit reporting companies. This is free and last 6 months. You do not need to pay for anything they try to sell you. After that every 4 months you can check your credit report, for free, from one of the companies.
Stop worrying, even though identity theft is rampant it is not usually done by a person that finds a wallet. It is done by people who actually seek out others identities.
So, make the police report, put on the alert, go to Social Security to get a new card, they usually want the police report number (do not carry the new one with you you only need it to apply for work) and go to your DMV and get a replacement license (that is your ID).
This is the free credit report site: www.annualcreditreport.com
Another gave you the information site on what to do if you are or potentially are an ID theft victim use it for extensive advice.

First--calm down--there's nothing to be scared of if you act promptly.
And--oddly enogh, because of the growth of identitiy theft, most institutions have much better services to help people than they used to. But do all of this NOW.
Here's what you do, including for the social security card (IN THIS ORDER)--leave out what does not apply--
Call your bank--tell them what happened. They'll take care of protecting you.
Call any credit card companies
Call your state motor vehicle bureau and report your lost drivers' license
Call the Social security administration (the website with numbers is ssa.gov)
Then call any others--school or employee Id, library card, etc.

Best to call the credit cards company's an have them call equafax an tell them to but a flag on your credit report as all your IDS & SS# were not lost as you lose them they stolen them if used. Mine ID & SS# was stolen an my credit card company helped me. With the info you lost they will corrupt your credit don't wait if you do they will issue credit cards in your name Capital One did mine. They did mine all with in 2 weeks so call soon. Don't worry they will help you out.But it's will be a pain each an every time you go for credit of any kind as they will have to call you an make sure it's you.Or you can pay $10,00 a month an have a company keep track of your credit>>

Call the Social Security Administration: 1-800-772-1213
You will have to get a replacement card:

And the documents you'll need are listed. There are also articles about identify theft - everything you'll need to know.
