Did you change the colour depth after you lowered the resolution ?

I suspect that what has happened is that you have upped to the max resolution. The memory limit on your video card has forced the system to use a low bit-per-pixel value at that resolution. But when you dropped back to the original resolution the system did not change the bits per pixel.

Change the colour depth setting to 16 bit or 24 bit.

Have you restarted the computer? Windows 98 often will not properly change display settings if you don't restart the computer.

If restarting doesn't work, you might need to update the driver for the display adapter/video card. To do this:
1. Go to the Control Panel. (Start>Settings>Control Panel)
2. Double-click Display. Go to the Settings tab.
3. Click the Advanced button.
4. Click on the Adapter tab. Click Properties.
5. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
6. Follow the instructions in the dialog box. Be sure to include Windows Update in the search location. (You can uncheck the other places like the CD-ROM and the Floppy drive if you don't have the disk for the display adapter.)

If this doesn't work, you may have to consult the video card manufacturer's web site to obtain the latest drivers. And if that fails, you probably have a more serious problem with the adapter, and you may have to get a new one. Just so you know, it's nothing to do with the monitor.

Note: The instructions may not be exact because I don't remember exactly how everything is written in Windows 98.

The best of luck to you!

The short cut, run System Restore, and revert to a time before you adjusted the screen resolution.

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

proceed as follows: reveal properties>Settings>stepped forward> Adapter>checklist all Modes If no different decision different than 640*480 is unavailable, then your video card has been corrupted.
