To clarify, the national sport of India is Field Hockey, not Hockey. The two terms refer to very different sports.
In the past, maybe 30-40 years ago, India was recognized as one of the best Olympic field hockey teams in the world. They won 8 gold medals and at least one Championship.
As a matter of fact, I think that Indian field hockey is still ranked in the top-10 worldwide.

In Sri Lanka, Volleyball is the national sport. But it is going very poorly. They cannot even win a south asian tournament. But cricket is the most popular in Sri Lanka. It is far popular than all other sports here. Reason for the cricket is not to regard as national sport is that cricket was introduced by the British government when Sri Lanka under the Britain.
I think same scenario in India.

Indians love to live on their past glory having established an unbeatable record of having won the Olympic Gold in field hockey for a very,very long time.Sadly,India is getting
thrashed by many newcomers to this sport.

Its d national sport cuz we've won and done really well in the sport in the past, like from the 1940s ti the 1980s
nw we quite suck at it
But cricket is the most liked sport and i guess it should be the national game

Hockey tooked its birth in India- But so sad to say is that India won Nil WC in Hockey & Crickets birth place is England and Very Happy to say that India Got WC in Cricket in 1983 itself.

Because at one point of time, India were supreme in Hockey and have won many olympikc medals in Hockey

cause around 20-40 years ago india used to be really good at field hockey. world champions like 16 years in a row. then the other nations caught up and theyre horrible now.

when they are planning to select the national game..., the hockey was very popular.., compared to cricket..., so thats the reason it is...
