Texas is a good place to find the best home for the money. I would check out San Antonio, Dallas or Houston first.

Central US or Alaska from starting @ around 5K. Now the real questions is what are your acceptable amenities? you can even find extremely cheap places such as Yuma AZ or empty central California. Arkansas Kansas Oklahoma
