In the earier days of this country, senetors, congressman, and representatvives were not paid to do these jobs. They had normal jobs such as farmers, store owners, and other normal jobs of the day. Now, congressmen and congresswomen get paid to do there jobs.

If we took away the payroll, wouldn't the lobbyists leave, and our governments money be alot more abundant?

Also, if people could have a job and then ride to congress on a horse and buggy every so often, wouldn't the technology today make it easy for people to do this better and more effeciently?

Open to both Republicans and Democrats (although im more partial to conservative answers)

Most of the senators are multi-millionaires. They don't run for the wages. They want the power and prestige that goes with the office.

I kinda of sorta Agree with the first Opinion. We shouldnt completely take away there pay roll. Maybe Figure out a monthly pay for being in a public office, maybe like $500 added to their regular job pay. As far as riding horses or whatever I dont see how that would be better.

Actually, I think that if they were not paid at all then they would probably be more likely to take bribes. The lobbyists would not leave. That is for sure. In fact, this would give the lobbyists more influence over government.

They need to be paid! But only minimum wage and work only 10 hours a month.... that way we would finally balance the budget!

Because while they are in session they spend spend spend!

We need to pay them or the special interest will. The whole country will go to pot because they will have an influence over voting and decisions. Free will is worth the price.

Interesting question.I'm afraid it would not change anything. Most of these people are not in it for the money. It's power and influence. You'd have to kill all the lobbyists to get rid of them or, outlaw lobbying. That will never happen.

Yes and I think that the elected officials should be limited to two terms.

I think that will encourage corruption, besides most of the senators are filthy rich, that money they "earn" is used to put gas in their cars.
