Do you understand that here in Portugal police does not do press conferences to discuss cases with the media?

I've no reason to doubt the commitment and competence of the Portuguese police. I don't necessarily buy the "send in the Brits" argument that has been put forward.

The judicial secrecy thing has been a bit frustrating especially at the beginning. I have seen enough information about missing children enquiries to know that, in places like the UK and the US, blanket publicity is considered an important strategy in trying to recover the child. The secrecy thing prevented that and one can't shake of the idea that it could have made a difference in those early stages and again when there was an image of a suspect that was not widely circulated at first.

The US and UK authorities have learned to use the media in criminal investigations and we have become used to the way they do that (I'm in the latter). Perhaps this is the result of bitter lessons that Portugal has yet to learn.

They have done their best under very difficult circumstances. If only the Mccann's hadn't been so economical with the truth right at the beginning, things might have panned out differently.
I hope that the truth abut Madeleine will come out, sadly i think its way too late to help the child herself, but some justice would help a little.

I think the Portuguese police has had their hands full with self-absorbed neglectful parents and their fan clubs.

Nobody is helping them to find the child or figure out what really happened to her.

I give them a B+ for grace under pressure.

Yes we do know that. But the newspapers in Portugal have been printing stories based on alleged comments from the police. So there are good things about your system and bad.

The Police are trying their best I believe.

Not talking to the Press always increases speculation; and lets face it, name one Reporter that tells the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Truth is boring and doesn't sell papers; lies and speculation do.

fidgetyfingers, I'd like to know why you think it would be so much different if it was the uk police dealing with it. Would the UK police make the parents contact them earlier, would they stop the parents from letting more than 20 people enter the room, ruining any chance of finding evidence?

I am in Ireland so I don't know what goes on in Portugal. I know nothing about the law there.

Well I hope they are building up a whole load of evidence in their silent world and tell us what's going on pretty soon. we are tired of waiting.

They have done their best but I think it would have been better if they had asked for help from the British police a lot earlier.
