Each cup size represents 1" difference between band and chest measurement. It is possible that the differential is less than 0 (AAA), 0 (AA), 1 (A), 2(B), 3(C) etc... It's all about what is the difference between the adjusted under bust measurement and the full bust measurement.
AA and AAA - the manufacturers needed something smaller than A (1" cup) so they started adding As since there weren't any letters below A.
A, B, C, D - these each represent a 1" difference between band measurement and chest measurement. As you increase one letter, you also increase one inch of cup size.
DD/E, EE/F, FF/G - women have this thing about not wanting to "appear too big" and manufacturers found out that women would buy a DD before they would buy an E because it sounds smaller. In some brands, you will see a difference in fit between a DD and an E because of the design of the bra. The E will be rounder while the DD comes forward more.
Not only is there an FF - Goddess makes a K and some women have to have theirs specially made.

RE:
why do some bra sizes come in double sizes (ie AA, DD, FF) or others in single sizes (B, C,E)?

Usually the double sizes are because the woman is like an "a" cup and a half. That works on sizes from a-d. After that the double size represents a second cup size but instead of going to a size m they can make the woman feel smaller by having a double "ff" or whateve size they are. Hope this helps :)

Basically because A,B,C are average sizes. If you double the A that means you're smaller than an A. DD means you're bigger than a D. Usually anything DD or more means you're bigger then the regular size. At least thats the way I understood it. I could be wrong though.

because like with shoes some women are between sizes so in order to get a comfortable fit then they have to get a half size.

a multiple letters are the equivalent of the single letters. i believe a DDD is the same thing as an E. probably a vanity size thing...who really wants to be known for wearing an F?
