This example shows the need for parentheses in mathematics, and in expressing mathematics in common language.

The answer is 2 or 3, depending on how you "group" or "order" the operations:

1. The half of (two plus two) = 1/2*(2 + 2) = 4/2 = 2.

2. The (half of two) plus two = 1 + 2 = 3.

Depending on how you parse the sentence the answer could be 3 (if it is "half of two" plus "two"). If instead you break it up as "half of two plus two" then the answer is 2.
