My boyfriend is almost 21 and he wants to have surgery for his undescended testicle. The main problem is, however, he doesn't have health insurance because he is self-employed. How much does this kind of surgery cost? What kind of options are there for patients without insurance. We are planning on getting married so he wants to do whatever he can not to incur any debt.

ok, tell him to get some insurance that will cost two hundred dollars or so or more depending on how good his credit/ health has been...and then look into getting surgery.

This is a problem that should have been corrected in childhood as it can result in cancer. He should go to a public health clinic or hospital to see what they say. He may have to look into working for someone else until his health problem is resolved or "bite the bullet " and save his money to pay cash. It is not something to ignore as this can be dangerous . My neighbor's child had similar surgery done as an outpatient in March. The total price with O.R suite, Anesthesia, pathology and pre and post op care was about $14,000. But insurance gave a discount and only 20% wasn't covered. You might look at seeking help from a University hospital as well.If your boyfriend is very low income, he might be able to get help from Medicaid.

the only sure way to find out is to ask a doctor.

alternatively, maybe he should be getting health insurance and wait a while after subscribing to get the problem dealt with. The wait is because most insurance policies have a clause about preexisiting conditions but often after a year or 2 that clause doesn't apply any more.

It might be cheaper to get insurance than to pay for the surgery but you won;t know until you ask those who provide it.

Ask the doctor who is going to perform the operation for him. I wonder will there be a problem if the testicle doesn't descend? Again ask the doctor, if it doesn't matter sexually, then no need to bother if sperm still can be produced from the undescend one, remember he still have the other one.
