It is not worse than in any big and busy place.
The only time I encountered it was on a very quiet bit of weekly market.
Keep the things you really need in a belt under your clothes, your tickets and a credit card that you keep for emergencies. And your passport.
Put your money in different places, like different pockets, some in the money belt, and if you are with several people, make sure each has some money on him.
If you walk around with a backpack, do not put valuables in the outer pockets and keep your bags with you at all times.
Basically what you would do in any big town.

I personally only ever had one problem in Barcelona where a gypsy woman came up to me to pin a carnation on me, luckily my firend pulled me back as there was another woman coming up behind me to get my stuff...they work in teams.
Apart from that I had no problems....I usually took a small backpack and had loops at the top which I always kept twisted togehter ( It took time to open my bag , but I felt safer)
and on trains, buses etc I would sit it in my lap.
I would carry my camera around in my hands ( looped around my wrist) and felt safe doing it, ( but was not really happy giving it to strangers to take my photo..so have very few of me on my travels!).
So just be sensible....I was more cautious than I was when I was living in the UK ( or here in NZ) , but I was not hyper with it. Just keep an eye out, don't advertise ( I did not have much to advertise anyway) and have a great time!

as mareeclara said... watch out for the gypsies... i can bet the gypsies she was talking about are from Romania... ( i should know.. i live here)... also, another tactic they like to use is in the trams and buses: 4-5-6 or more gypsies get in and kinda surround u and touch u...i mean... "bump into u" claiming there is not enough space in the bus or smth... and when they do that they also reach for u're pockets. If u realise they took smth from u... they will begint o shout , scream, become violent, so watch out... :) especially in spain :)

Thank God never experience such. To be sure always keep your bag containing important documents & money infront at your chest. Never show in public money. As they say, "money is the root of all evil".
