I am having my kitchen floor vynled layed but the fitter told me my concrete floor needs to be screeded. It is uneven because we have had work done in the kitchen ie.walls took down ,to make it a larger kitchen. What i need to know is what compound i need to use and the best way to go about it .Its still not a large kitchen so i would like to do it myself save getting a builder in .The main reason i need to get the job done quickly for the fitter will lay the vynl as soon as the floor is suitable.

self levelling compound will NOT do this as it will be too deep.
Floor screeding is not an easy job, you need floor laying trowels, a worn in float, and a long straight edge.
Floor screed is basically a semi-dry mix of Grade A sand and cement. You will need to mix it at 3-1.
Alternatively you can get it delivered by your local cement mixing company - they will add retarders and fibreglass strands for strength.
it will need to be at least 1 inch thick and the lowest spot. You will find that after one hour - you will not have gone far on your own and you will be fighting it all the way. and at this stage you would wish you had got someone in.
Looking at around £400.00 to get someone in depending on the sizde of the room.
I repeat it is not easy, I am a builder but I get my Father-in-law in as He is a plasterer.
If you attempt it yourself - you may find that the floor is worse than when you started - No offense of course!

When you watch an expert it looks so easy, when you try it yourself that's a different thing altogether unless you have some experience in the job,. Depending on the amount of uneveness you could use a self levelling compound suitable for minor imperfections, If the floor is very uneven you will need to lay a washed sand/cement screed thickness dependant on how uneven the floor is, think of 1" (25mm) minimum.

Use a product called ARDITE it's available in two types one for approx 2mm to 9mm screed and the other one is for a thicker screed. It comes in a 25kg bag and you mix it up like you would plaster and remember to bond the floor first with appropriate bonding. The best way to apply your screed is with a straight edge about 500mm long.Hope this helps

depending on how uneven your floor is makes a difference, but normally you would fill any larger holes using sand and cement only need about 4- 1 mix, then when any deeper repairs have dry ed you can use a self levelling compound available at any merchant or diy outlet, this is very easy to use as long as the mix is correct ( always on the bag ) mixed to a runny slurry you just start in one corner pour it on and trowel out roughly, make sure there are no lumps in the mix and the floor is clean, work across the room and once down it will find its own level, when dry another layer can be done if needed and for vinyl flooring when dry the flood should be rubbed down using a carbide block to take off any small lumps and bumps that if left will damage your new vinyl/

it all depends on what thickness the screed is and do you want to salvage the quarry tiles the easiest way would be to use a small sds drill with a chisel attachment on and set to chisel mode then once you get to the bottom of the screed then you can start breaking it up at an angle /if it is just spashes then i would advise using a brick acid from your local builders yard that shouild work !

if you are putting down vinyl then the floor must be absolutely flat as every defect will show through ..you need to use a latex screed ..important it is latex as it will dry in 24 hours ready to take glue ..normal self levelling will not ..if the floor is bad ..do it in two coats
