Are animals such as mules and other hybrid species given scientific names? Because in order for an animal to be considered a living thing it has to be able to reproduce but these crossbred animals are sterile. Are they given scientific names such as (canis familiaris)?

Actually, there ARE cases of mules being fertile:

OK, this is the only reference I can find for the naming issue. While it is about fish and not mammals, I leave it up to you:
"Rather, we indicate hybrids by identifying the two parental species. For example, if you crossed a texas cichlid, Herichthys cyanoguttatus with a convict cichlid, Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, the most correct name to use would be Hericthys cyanoguttatus x Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, i.e., the two names joined by an x."

The mule is given a scientific name. The mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. The horse is Equus caballus, the donkey is Equus asinus. The cross is usually indicated as Equus asinu x Equus caballus, or Equus asinu x caballus or E. asinu x caballus.
