being a chef in a "restaurant" town, I can relate to your experience. It seems easier to get an audience with the pope than a reservation at some popular restaurants. Then, after all you go thru to get in, they "size" you up and decide where you're seated--there are the "A" tables for the folks who "fit in" and there is "Siberia" (this is a restaruant industry term) where the average Joes (and Janes) are seated.
I know it's a sad situation but the way I look at it is: these restaurants exist ONLY because regular folk, like us, patronize them and pay them to serve us food--food is food, and JUST food, nothing more, regardless of the cache associated with the restaurant or the chef. If you decide to go to a place and subject yourself anything less than what a normal person should expect from the dining experience, then it really is your fault for allowing them to do it to you. Next, at any point during your meal, if you are subjected to a similar situation do the following:
-ask to see the general manager or owner--they'e usually on shift during service.
-ask to see the chef--I know as a chef, waiters can screw up even the best meals with bad service.
-walk out--this is not the same as "dine and dash"
-be bold, be heard, don't cower,
-don't be an ****** or unreasonable--people will respond better.
-be as nice and cool as possible--remember it's only food.
-ask yourself: what's the big deal?
-let others know about your experiences--good or bad--there are many dining blogs which post dining experiences.

God, how rude of them! What a snobby place! It's only sort of happened to us. We were in jeans and t-shirts and caps because we were going to the town fair. We stopped in a neighborhood restaurant for a bite to eat first. We got the worst service, I guess because we looked like poor scum or something. We had to beg for refills or to get the waitress's attention. We were practically ignored. I have never felt so much like dirt in my life. We actually tipped well to prove we weren't poor scum, but informed them that we'd never had such poor service there before and would NOT be coming back. And we haven't!
And yes, being judged does totally suck.

Wow! I can't believe that actually happened to you! I can't say that's happened to me before. I guess it's just another example of how quick people are to judge when it's not up to us. It is a terrible thing...but, maybe if we continue to not let things slide like that then we can make it a little better? Good for your grandpa for not getting intimidated...even if it did take money to stop the stares. I'm sorry that it had to come to that!

I cant believe that happened it is shame that this is happening but i guess people kind of judge you on looks and it passes over to restaurants and other places to.
It such a shame i would file a complaint for their service
Anyway they are snotty snooty rich people overconfident I guess.
HOPE THIS DOESNT HAPPEN AGAIN

Hasn't happened to me, but there is an hotel in my town which caters for the very rich and famous. Anybody local going in hasn't been asked to leave, but has been frozen out, ignored so blatantly that eventually you get the message and leave of your own accord. Obviously, money counts - in very large banknotes.
