I am taking a trip this week to South Carolina and on my way home to MD I would like to find a cool town to stay the night at and eat at a nice place (by nice I mean fun, not expensive). I am thinking somewhere in maybe the northern part of NC or anywhere in VA. I will be traveling on 95, so close to that route would be preferred. I will have time to do tourist stuff, so any suggestions would be great!

Hmm... Where in SC will you be leaving at. Since there are two major routes from South Carolina north to Maryland (I-85 and I-95) I will suggest Raleigh in NC. It is between 85 and 95 around I-40. Downtown Raleigh has a nice restaurant called Tir Na Nog that I like to go to. And there are plenty of other restaurants and clubs in the area that are a lot of fun.

One you are north of Raleigh, there is not much worth noting until you get to Petersburg, VA. Petersburg has some OK spots and some bad spots, unless you are familiar with the area I would skip past until you are in Richmond. I like to hang out at Capital Alehouse. There are two locations, one downtown and one in the west end. Either location is a lot of fun and is close to busy areas with other restaurants and nightlife.

The person who stated that Virginia is expensive is full of it. Like any state, there are areas that are more expensive and areas that are cheaper. You won't be spending as much at a 50 year old diner that the owners own in full and do not pay a lease as compared to a new and fancy restaurant in an upscale area with expensive property values. You can always poke around for good deals at any location, it just takes a little work.

Have fun and good luck!

My mom and I just took that trip in May! We had a great time although the ride back home was a little loopy bc we drove straight thru from Beaufort SC to Northern NJ. Virginia is ver very expensive no matter where you go. Your best bet is stay in Northern NC. ONce you get thru SC and NC the trip goes really fast esp. if your having fun in the car!!! Enjoy and have a SAFE trip.
