Per the Homelink website which is at www.homelink.com , the homelink states "What other capabilities does HomeLink have besides operating garage doors? - answer HomeLink will activate/deactivate home/office lighting and small appliances; lock/unlock entry door locks; and open/close gates." OnStar is not aimed at the same functionality.
OnStar gives you vehicle diagnostics, turn by turn navigation, emergency services contacts, crisis assitance (During severe weather, natural disasters, or other crisis events, push your red or blue OnStar button to access additional services...and no, I am not making this up...see their website), stolen vehicle assistance, ride assitance (to avoid a DUI), accident assitance, information, remote horn/light (so you can find your vehicle you parked and then forgot where you parked), remote unlock, roadside assistance, virtual advisor("so you can get stock and traffic updates while driving") , and use to make cell calls. With OnStar you get to pay additional $$$ for services your cell phone company and vehicle insurance already charge you for...and not all services are available for each plan.
Bottom line is neither program is worth the cost of having them if you already own a quality mobile phone, have good insurance, go out with a designated driver/cash set aside for a cab, and carry more than set of keys for your vehicle in your pockets.

Mazda's Homelink System And GM's OnStar are Nothing Alike. OnStar Does Things Like Unlocks Your Doors If You Lock Your Keys In Them, Traces Your Car If It Is Stolen And Does System Checks. The Homelink System Is Used To Open Your Garage Doors.

Ford's homelink is no more than three buttons on the sunvisor that will let you program 3 garage door openers on the system. That way you don't have to carry all the openers and have them hanging off of the sun visors. All you have is 3 small buttons and a red flashing light to let you know when you pressed the button that it is working.
The onstar system is a little more than that.

I'd like to say that I would never own any such vehicle, except it's just a matter of time before every vehicle is tied in with such systems, so that you may be taxed based on where and when you drive. Oh, and so you can be mailed speeding tickets. Wait, you didn't signal before turning? That's another ticket. Perhaps the US Postal Service may yet be saved due to all this new business.

A couple of years ago, I had a friend who was called by OnStar while he was driving about 90mph. They asked if he knew the whereabouts of his truck, in case it was being used as a getaway vehicle. He canceled shortly after that, and no, I would not have it, or a GM for that matter.

Onstar has more features and better customer service and has been around the longest. I would buy gm before mazda. Toyata before both.
