My son weighs 17 lbs, 2 ounces and he is barely 4 months old. He is formula fed. Should I worry since the doctor told me that the average 1 year old weighs 20 lbs??

My son is almost 26 inches long and weighed 9.9 lbs at birth..I am assuming that he is just a bigger than average baby.

He is perfectly fine. He is in the 75th percentile for weight and height which is awesome. dont worry. enjoy your baby!

Babies are supposed to be cute and cuddly. they will loose the fat once they start crawling and walking. Please feed him how much ever he wants.

You are doing an awesome job!

As far as his weight : length ratio goes, he sounds about normal. My baby was 17 pounds 3 ounces and 26.5 inches at his 5.5 months check, and the doctor was very happy with him. (My son is soy-formula fed.) It sounds like you've got a bigger than average baby, but he doesn't sound like he's overweight at all. Maybe he's just developing quicker than "normal" or you or daddy passed on some big genes.

Babies tend to grow more in the first 6 months than the next 6, so just because yours will have gained 10+ pounds by his half-birthday then doesn't mean he'll weigh 30 pounds by age 1. I wouldn't worry, but keep an eye on his weight because you may have to switch to a bigger carseat sooner than you thought!

My girl is was 15.4 and 26 inches long at her 4month check up. She was 9.3 and 22 inches long at birth. I got such mixed signals from my doctor, I was about livid when I left.
She was 95% in height and 89% in weight, but 75% in height and weight ratio. Ok, so is my baby too fat or skinny? Doc says most babies gain weight during this period, mind you my daughter had gain 2.5 pounds from 2 months to 4 months. So I ask again, what is she fat or skinny? Doc says a little under weight for her height but not for her age! WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN!?! She says so long as she's gaining the right amount of weight between each appt. its ok. I hate these stupid standards they have....they get these standards by comparison to the average...who sets that average? all these fat overweight babies? I've decided to ignore those percentiles. So long as she gains the average 1-1.25 pounds per month. My daughter eats very very good, isn't fat by any means and is growing like a weed. She was a long skinny baby @ birth, and she just may be long and skinny all her life.

Just a bigger than average baby. Don't try putting him on a diet or anything...that young, they need their nutrition. If he starts to seem fat as a toddler/young kid, then start worrying. My mother in law says that my husband was almost 10 lbs at birth too, and he's now 6'4, 210 lbs, and not fat at all. :) [Scandinavian] Doctors advise the general public, there are always exceptions to the rule.

That's a big boy!

My little girl will be 5 months in 2 weeks and weighs only 12lbs 3oz and is about 25" long.

Your little guy just might be bigger then the average. But you can certainly talk with your physician. Most babies once they become mobile will start to thin down. But if his parents are taller then maybe it is just his genes.

your doctor is silly. my son was 8 pounds 12 ounces at birth and at 5 months, weighs 18 pounds. he is 28 inches long. he is perfectly healthy and happy. some babies are just bigger than others; your son sounds perfectly fine and well taken care of. don't worry mom; you are doing a great job!

Yeah, don't you worry. Formula fed babies are always a little chunkier than their breast fed friends. Each baby grows at a different rate. Below average, average or above average makes no difference as long as he's growing.
My cousin's baby was 20lbs at 4 months, he was a rolly polly baby, now he's a very handsome thinly built 7 year old.
Enjoy him, they grow so fast and don't sweat the small stuff ;)

it'sa little bigger than average but he was little bigger than average when he was born. after about 4 months babies weight gain slows down a lot and as they start to stand and what not they even may lose some weight. my son just turned 4 mopnths and probably weighs about 15.5 lbs and he was 6 lbs 6 oz when he was born

That sounds right! A little big but I rather have it that way than to small.

At my sons 4month check up he was 15lbs and 25 inches long. He was only 6lbs 14oz at birth.

Your baby sounds perfect to me!
