Cheerleaders in hockey.
Excuse me for the stereotype, but I'm always honest.

I don't really think they belong in hockey, but all the teams seem to have them. I always found them pretty dorky (hockey's not a dorky sport)
Don't you think the fans do enough cheering and what not, and the teams don't need cheerleaders?
Seems a waste of money to me and an embarrasment.
What are your opinions?

I always thought cheerleading in any sport is ridiculous – but in hockey it’s beyond pathetic. // Cheerleading is the result of someone in power (usually an ignorant, horny male) making a really stupid decision…. Probably because his niece needs a job or something along those lines.

The reason it’s most pathetic in hockey is because the average hockey fan is more intelligent than other pro sports. // Therefore this decision has underestimated our intelligence. – It’s an insult.

It sends the wrong message to young men and women. – If you want to gawk at women in miniskirts there’s plenty of places to do it. – A hockey game should not be one of those places.

Cheerleaders look stupid, they sound stupid and are a horrible reflection on women worldwide.

Well, at this point, the NHL seems desperate for anything that motivates fans and gets them into the arenas. Cheerleaders are just another attempt at this. I doubt it will last because hockey isn't really the type of sport where u can have cheerleaders going around easily (especially with the ice and whatnot). However, if these cheerleaders get fans in the seats, then they will have payed for themselves and helped the league.

Haha, the outfits those girls wear and all that makeup highlight two things: their "pretty" faces and their "hot" bodies... What does any of that have to do with hockey again?

During periods of play, I'm not watching anything but the players. I cheer according to what's going on. I don't need... "help". Lol. That makes it sound like they assume most hockey fans are incompetent, when hockey fans, as we know, are arguably the most knowledgeable sports fans.

During intermission... I'm either running to the concession stands ("SO thirsty, stupid lines, AHH!") or to the restrooms ("Had TOO much to drink, stupid lines, AHH!") or I'm looking up at the jumbotron at the scores from other games...

So I agree, they do seem dorky, embarrassing... and therefore, a waste of money.

OK being a girl that plays hockey there was always a big laugh about the the figure skaters. I hate them! We have cheerleaders for my high school's teams and it is just dumb! and when they practice the totally **** up the ice! If you want to see cheerleaders go watch football or something else that is lame and has cheerleaders. And hockey fans don't need cheerleaders, we already love playing and watching the sport (why else would we go to a game, duh?)

I know the 'Canes and the Rangers do it, but I'm not sure about the other teams. I don't know, it just doesn't work for me. Having them all spread out across the arena, dancing on the steps....it just looks wierd. Cheerleaders should be functioning as one group at one location (like the NBA, NFL, CFL, etc), not seperately like this. Now, if they used to be amateur figure skaters dancing on figure skates in the middle of the ice, then I'd appreciate it more.

Also, there was a small stink late last season on Lundqvist (sp?) saying something allegedly wrong (derogatory, maybe) to one of the girls who was clearing the snow from his crease. I don't know, to me, the job description itself is a bit chauvanistic: wearing something skimpy (not complaining about that) while doing some ice maintenance (complaining about that). It just seems wrong to me. If it was a girl in regular ice maintenance clothes, yeah, okay, whatever, everybody needs a job, but the NHL shouldn't sell sex like this. It's just dumb.

Cheerleaders have no more of an affect on the game than the vendors do. I am thankful that the Kings do not put anyone on their payroll for such a pointless position. I do have to applaud the Ducks though for putting theirs to work during TV timeouts. They make them clean up all the snow build up along the benches and around the net.

I think ... is not great. I much prefer . . .

As far as cheerleaders in hockey, well stupid basically. I like looking at them but go to Japan if you want to see how dopey cheerleaders are at hockey.

I don't think it's as much a waste of money as the contract Toadtuzzi signed with the Sux.

I too am a woman that plays ice hockey and I hate the ice bimbos. The year after they first had them they did a survey amongst season ticket holders and it was unanimous; everyone hated the bimbos. Why they have continually brought them back is beyond me. Everyone hates them. They can't dance, they aren't attractive and are totally not necessary. Ice bimbos must go!!

Don't get me wrong.... I'm all in favour of hot girls showing skin, I'm cool with that. But I am a hockey purist.
It's like it's a trade off in order to get hot girls, need to get rid of the fighting in hockey.
And fighting is part of the game.
Maybe if the cheerleaders started fighting......

enjoy

Well, in Europe they always have those guys with big drums at hockey games-but I don't think they get paid for that. That seems kind of fun. Swiss hockey fans in particular often make most North American fans seem kind of passive.
