My boyfriend's father talks without any thought to his words whatsoever. He interrupts, talks over people and he asks the same questions over and over again - mostly because he doesn't stop long enough to hear the answers. If I get annoyed, I'm told to "be patient - he's old."
He's 72. He's got all his wits about him, he's no dottering fool. So, why is it OK for him to yammer on and on?

Soooo.... when I tell the kids not to interrupt and not to talk over each other, that's just teaching them to be polite. But when I'm 72 all the manners and what not that I've learned - that can all go out the window?
can't wait

I think they are afraid that he might beat the hell out of you if you were to "cross him". 72 is not old anymore. Lots of people are still in the work force until they are 70. If I were you I would certainly watch my boyfriend for signs of the same characteristics. It could be that their family "culture" is patriarchal and the man is the head of the house and he can do and say pretty much what he wants. Most likely he has been like that forever. Try questioning some of the distant relatives (nieces and nephews) to see if he was always like that.

Your friends and family are right to say, be patient, he's old. You have to think of elderly people somewhat as children. Their bodies are getting weak and that includes their memory. They basically become like children. I had the same problem with my husband's grandmother. She says anything and everything. She just comes out and says it! She's a wonderful lady and I love her to death, but some of the stuff she says is kind of painful. Anyways, hang in there. When you are old, I'm sure you would want your children and grandchildren to be patient with you too. It's just another part of life.

Its really not acceptable, and maybe you should ask him not to interrupt you till you say what you have to say. Probably no one has ever said anything to him about it. I believe I would if it was out of control.

Because he's old. Older people get confuzed and nervous and talk to themselves. It's not that he's interrupting you hes just making sure someone is still listening to him. You should talk to him when he's doing that, maybe he won't do it so often. Older people do tend to get annoying when they talk to no one about nothing. He just feels lonely and wants someone to talk to him.
Good luck!

It's called showing respect for your elders. Sounds like you should.

My husband does that.
It's a "head of the house" thing.
