All I know is meritorious means to be praised. And one doesn't have to be talented or gifted to be praised.

Meritourious usually implies that one worked hard to earn a specific privilege. Llike a merit raise which is given to those employees who have gone above and beyond what they were supposed to do even though it was not required of them. Where as talent is usually considered something that one is born with. The implication is that the person is given something but did not have to earn it. However, just because one is talented does not mean that they don't have to work hard or that they did not earn whatever rewards came their way.

A talented person means he has potential capability to do something. A talented musician can learn to play music faster and more naturally than most of us. But meritorious is about something you have done, not about potential.

I would compare meritious as a manager & talented as a leader.

Meritious may have managed & scored over his peer colleagues by way of his performance based on the groups structural make-up.

A talented person can always be marked by his competencies. He would always be creative enough to use his creativity , communication & focused goal setting approach. (That is how he has become talented )
