A friend and I were discussing this topic and he said it was against the law. I don't understand why a law like that would exist. I mean you aren't killing anyone else. And please don't start with the it is selfish, think about your loved ones, answers. I just want to know if it is against the law.

Suicide is illegal in some countries-
In the United States, suicide has never been punished as a crime nor penalized by property forfeiture or ignominious burial.[citation needed] Historically, various states listed the act as a felony, but all were reluctant to enforce it. By 1963, six states still considered attempted suicide a crime (North and South Dakota, Washington, New Jersey, Nevada, and Oklahoma that repealed its law in 1976). By the early 1990s only two US states still listed suicide as a crime, and these have since removed that classification. In some U.S. states, suicide is still considered an unwritten "common law crime," that is, a crime based on the law of old England as stated in Blackstone's Commentaries. (So held the Virginia Supreme Court in Wackwitz v. Roy in 1992.) As a common law crime, suicide can bar recovery for the family of the suicidal person in a lawsuit unless the suicidal person can be proven to have been "of unsound mind." That is, the suicide must be proven to have been an involuntary, not voluntary, act of the victim in order for the family to be awarded money damages by the court. This can occur when the family of the deceased sues the caregiver (perhaps a jail or hospital) for negligence in failing to provide appropriate care.[3]

Yes in most states suicide is against the law. Punishment ranges from rehabilitation and counsler visits to a forced lifetime stay at a mental institution. If you are considering suicide... make sure you succeed, the punishment in this case is worse then the crime.
FYI- I am not encouraging any reader/question asker to commit suicide. I am merely speaking the truth in relation to the punishment.

I'm pretty sure it's just an urban legend. Logically, it would be very difficult to prosecute a dead person for committing suicide. I think the confusion arises from the legal battles that ensue after a suicide, i.e., collecting life insurance policies, distribution of the estate, that sort of thing.

well it's against religion! the person will be cursed! do you know why?? because god didn't create a loser! everyone is strong as long as they have confidence, believe in god , and know that life goes on! a person must not stop on every problem and say:"i can't handle it why am i born??" or "did god make me to suffer?" no this is not right , i don't know if there was a law for that but i wish there was! seriously someone who has a brain to think with never commits suicide! he/she must face this problem(even if it was the worst) and say"I CAN DO IT BECAUSE I'M STRONG!!" never ever stop at that point , move on and live happy cause you deserve it!! , hope i gave a reasonable answer : )

It attempting suicide is against the law. If you attempt and fail, it's against the law and you can be hauled off and get help. However, if you commit suicide, that can't really do anything about, seeing how you are dead. If you plan a suicide, that is also illegal.

It's certainly ilegal in the UK, not that it is a very enforceable law.
I think it has something to do with the fact that someone has to clean up the mess many suicides leave behind (jumping off a bridge etc..)
Please, don't jump!

I don't think it is against the law, but a lot of life insurance policies and health insurance policies will not be paid in the event of suicide.
