You can do it however you like, but I recommend using simple words that are common and familiar to anyone. People with military backgrounds tend to use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet (See below). I really don't think it matters so long as you come through clear. That's really the whole point. I talked to a guy the other day who used US cities (Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, etc.) It worked really well.
The NATO phonetic alphabet:
Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Echo Foxtrot Golf Hotel India
Juliet Kilo Lima Mike November Oscar Papa Quebec Romeo
Sierra Tango Uniform Victor Whiskey Xray Yankee Zulu
[This alphabet dates from about 1955 and is approved by the
