Bryan Hyland was the singer and co-writer - the song was co-written by Del Shannon (of 'Runaway' fame). Of course, Hyland also sang the "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" song which makes me wanna puke!
He later did "The Joker Went Wild" and "Gypsy Woman" (a cover of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions song).

I dont know any song with that title in the 50's or 60's and I know the era well. Maybe you mean:"Donna" by Ritchie Valens and that was in 1958
