Ugh, it pains me to say this, but Barry Bonds.
We all know that in 2001 he hit 73 home runs, but you may have forgotten that he also had an on-base-percentage of .515. That makes him the first person since Ted Williams to have an OBP of over .500, and the first person to do so in the modern era. He also set a new record for slugging pecentage that year (.863), putting the nail in the coffin for "best season ever."
For the best season ever by a non-steroids user, I would go with Babe Ruth. Take your pick of years: 1921, 1924, or any year between 1926 and 1931, The man was a god. You may have heard this before, but he once hit more home runs than any other team in the American League!

I'd go with Barry Bonds in 2004:
- a record 232 walks (34 more than the previous record)
- almost a 6:1 walk:strikeout ratio
- 45 homers in only 390 at-bats
- the highest single-season OBP in history
- the fourth-highest slugging percentage in history
- the highest single-season OPS in history
I don't think anyone can discount how much fear Barry struck in pitchers then. That walk number will be viewed 50 years from now the same way we see some of the old pitchers' marks like 40 wins in a season.

If not the best, then one of the top ever would have to be Babe Ruth's 1921 season.
152 GP
540 AB
177 R
204 H
59 HR
171 RBIs
145 BB
.378 AVG
.846 SLG
that's some good stuff

I would like Ruth's 1921 season,
59 homers, 171 RBIs, .378 BA, .512 OBA, .846 SLG (none of these his actual career high) . He was also 2-0 that year in 2 games, (but with a bad era)

depends because there are so many offensive categories, but no one man has dominated all of them
whether its Bonds 73 HR, Hack Wilsons 191 RBI, Ichiro's 262 hits, Nap Lajoie's .426 BA, etc etc
even the last triple crown winner (Carl Yaz) didnt have numbers close to these
so its too hard to tell who had the BEST offensive single season

Babe Ruth in 1922 (I think was the year, not positive) put up these ridiculous numbers:
.376 BA 50+ hrs 168 RBI 176 Runs scored. (I might actually be low on the last two numbers there.) Its hard to imagine a better year than that. BOSTONboy found the stats I was thinking of.

Either Bonds 2004 or Ruth 1921, depending upon how much umbrage one is prepared to take.
