When was the last time there was a successful protest?

Hi, How do they earn money, or do they work at all? i know i could not afford to take time off work to go and pitch up a tent to protest about something. If i were pitching up a tent it would be somewhere rural and i would be on my annual holidays. They will most probably go ahead and build the third runway at Heathrow anyway. Also those protesters that have been banned from going to Heathrow have tried to cause disruption by stopping aeroplane wings being transported by barge to France WHY??? It's a total waste of time.......

Yes I agree , same as the tree huggers tying themselves up in trees.
But folk do have the right to protest, I don't mind that in fact it's a good bit of entertainment!
I understand Prince Charles spoke to his plants about this protest and they thought it was a good idea, in fact they went a bit further and suggested the protest continue until all airports were shut down , leaving the way open to shut down all motorways. These planks, (sorry plants) said this would certainly cut dow on pollution in many ways it would stop folk getting to and from work, so no industry, no electricity .
But the flowers would flourish, and most important of all the very rare. lesser speckled spawn newt would start to breed again.
Then if it could ever be proved that there was such a thing as blocked up ozone layers etc, the whole world would be grateful.
So they could be right I suppose??

Yes it is a waste of time protesting at Heathrow, because all that does is to p*ss off the ordinary "man in the street" by wrecking his holiday and making a bad situation even worse.

When will the protesters learn that this sort of tactic simply alienates them from the voting public?

It is not the people at Heathrow that need to be lobbied, they have little or no influence, it is the people who make the decisions and approve the plans. Lobby Parliament, protest outside the House, lobby your MP, protest outside his house. Democracy is a wonderful thing but, to be effective, you have to use it properly and get the majority on your side - not p*ss them off.

Come on, what happened to the man who used to tunnel under things like that in the UK..machines could not do any work because they had no idea where the tunnels were...I believe the character "Spider" on Coronation Street was a take on this guy..so, what I am saying is if you are bent on stopping it then it is just a matter of how far you want to go or what risk you are prepared to take....the sad part is if you have a serious suntan from demonstrating you may get a label.

It is a choice that everyone makes nobody is saying people should not do business or take a holiday or have a job, so why are you all saying that the person that cares about what is happening to our world should not have a voice.
It is time to take stock of what is happening to the environment and rethink how we travel and perhaps just have one Leisure holiday flight a year.
China are now having the floods that we had in the UK perhaps Noah had the right idea when he built an Ark.

Protesters are there to make sure that you have a say in what ever you may want to say in the future. DO YOU WANT YOUR RIGHTS TAKEN AWAY. One day you may not have any rights left.

If it was up to me I'd send in the riot police with rubber bullets and water cannons and crack a few skulls. You wouldn't catch me at one of these protests. I hope these left-wing idiots get what they deserve - a long prison sentence. Vote Mental Mickey for Prime Minister and I promise to turn the UK into a fascist right-wing totalitarian police state. We're dangerously close already, so why not go all the way? Do these people really think they will make a difference? Heathrow's fate was pretty much sealed when they built terminal four. What extra difference is terminal five going to make? Air travel is here to stay, and in the modern global marketplace we have to face the reality. Maybe we are going to f**k the planet up with global warming, but hey, the monkeys and chimpanzees are already waiting to take our place when we are gone, so let's have fun while we can! Human-kind isn't going to last forever.

Difficult to say it is a waste of time when it has received so much press coverage, and even a direct response from Downing Street.

The entire point was to draw attention to the environmental impact of air travel, which is already accomplished.

Now, as to whether protesting an airport is rational in itself.. hardly.

Have you seen the tents that are being erected to display environmentally friendly products. Surely this is an Expo by any other name and under guise of a protest they are using someone else's land to sell items for profit.

I hope BAA sue the organisers for trespass. They wont get any money but it is time to face up to this nonsense.

Whether we like it or not our whole economy is based more and more on travel/transport and the support services and technologies/products to enable that travel. Stop the movement of people for business and pleasure and see how rapidly you are overtaken by poverty.

The protestors would acheive far more for their cause by joining the Lib Dems and campaigning to get more environmentally sound MPs elected -- but that's a long hard work approach and most of these kids are slackers.

In the meanwhile they'll acheive as much as the anti-Iraq war protestors managed: 2 million on the streets of London, a few weeks later "bombs away!" and the 2 million who had marched mostly abstained in 2005 or voted for Respect and other such fringe muppets so Labour got back in.

Yes it is an outrageous waste of time. Firstly they are demonstrating on the flawed hypothesis that global warming is a direct result of CO2 emissions from such sources as aircraft. In fact there is in fact growing evidence to refute that connection although this is apparently being hushed up by the likes of the BBC under government orders.

Secondly they are interfering with the right of people in this country to go away on holiday without being disrupted by such immature mischief makers. As such they are interfering with the rights of ordinary decent people who work hard for a living, unlike these layabouts.

These layabouts should be made to do something useful to mankind such as fruit picking,.confronting opium growing in Afghanistan, or else looking after OAPs or building new prisons within the UK. to relieve their obvious boredom from too much time off and excessive soft living.
