There is a smell when I use the Air conditioning and I can’t figure out where it is coming from. Is there a Cabin Air Filtration System? Where is the filter? What else can cause this?

The smell is probably mildew. Get a can of Lysol, turn on the ac. with fan on high. Spray the Lysol down into the vents out by your windshield wipers. That should kill the mildew.

Your Ford dealer is equipped to run a special concentration of anti-bacterial gas through your air conditioning duct work for an extended time of an hour or two. It's the only way to kill off the foul bacteria smell your getting. You are not alone on this problem.
Lysol in the cabin will not circulate through the duct work or kill bacteria within it.

there was an option on 1999 explorer .some have one and some don"t . it is located behind the glove box. the smell is coming from the evaporator core. it is cause by mildew and debris build up. to cut down the smell, use a evaporator FOAM type cleaner spray can. you spray it at the inlet of the a/c fan blower fan. you cannot get it at local parts store. local part store carry the liquid type which does NOT perform very well. you can only get it from the car dealers
