How about a story where the Hero and his sidekicks and friends go to rescue the world, but the hero DIES partway through the book, the sidekicks don't have any of his skills, knowledge or resourcefulness, but they carry on without him as ordinary people and somehow manage to save the world anyway?

How about this: a guy invents a time machine that takes him back to the Renaissance, where he falls in love with a lady-in-waiting for the queen, and he can't convince her that he really is from the year 2007, but he can't be without her, so he decides to forfeit his life here in modern times and live in the Renaissance, with all its problems and disease and all, just to be with her.
