My dishwasher has a sour milk like smell to it, plus there is a build-up of soap residue all over the inside. Thank you!

Throw a little bleach in it AFTER it is filled with water. Then run it for a cycle while it is EMPTY of dishes.

A little bleach means maybe a cup or two - NOT a whole jug of the stuff.

My hope was to berate another Gomer on YA for suggesting that you put dishwashing detergent into the machine! *laughter*

Comet makes a spray cleaner (Comet Bathroon Cleaner) that works great in removing soap residue anywhere. Spray the Comet cleaner well inside your dishwasher, close the door & let it set for a while, then put it through a "wash cycle" to rinse it thoroughly, without the dishwashing soap.

There is a great product out there by Jet-Dry. You put it into your dishwasher and run a cycle (without any other dishes) and depending on how dirty your dishwasher is, it does a good job. The first time I used it to clean my dishwasher, I did it twice over 3 days and did a great job!

There are dishwasher cleaners on the market but try just putting 2 big tablesspoons of soda crystals with the same amount of washing powder into the empty dishwasher and put it on its highest setting.

Purchase the Crystal Light Lemon in powder form. Put in your dishwater and run a cycle with no dishes. This stuff has removed lime scale and rust stains. After seeing that, I'd never drink the stuff, but keep it on hand for the dishwasher!

Vinegar!
Run a cycle with just vinegar in it.
Can also be used in your washing machine for clothes.
