I am finding it a losing battle to maintain my pond to a pristine level, constantly batteling green water etc...once the fish have gone, what is the best product to use to clarify the water & permanently rid the water of algae. I have been told to use bleach but am concerned about my liner & pond filter? pond is approx 12 x 15 feet & over 45" in the very middle, depth at the edges varies from 15" & up....I live in Ontario Canada. Thanks

i have a 1800 gallon pond. you are having problems like i had....very green water. you dont have to wait til the fish are gone, get a "uv sterilizer light". it's amazing. i had dark dark green water, its called pond pea soup. within 5 days my water is crystal clear, i can sea every koi and goldfish so clearly. you can get them online. they are wonderful. DONT WAIST YOUR TIME WITH ALGAE FIX. GET THE UV LIGHT.

1. DO NOT let the goldfish free in some river or lake. They do not belong there. It would be better for the environment to end their lives. If you would prefer for them to live, perhaps you could give them away on Craigslist or Freecycle. Someone would want them. Check with schools too.

2. If you are fertilizing your lawn, stop. All those nutrients run into the pond and are super algae food. Stop the algae at it's source! If you are adding nutrients and have no way to remove them, you will *always* have algae.

3. I would recommend planting some native vegetation to help absorb those nutrients. How about some blue flag iris along the edges? There are many options here.

4. No bleach! You will kill everything in the water and add salt. And it's probably only a temporary solution.

Want a quick fix for the algea? Look for a small barely bail. It is an all natural way to rid your pond of algae. I hope this helps :-)

Barley straw is more effective and works for longer periods than wheat or other straws. The variety of barley straw does not seem to have any effect on the performance. Hay should never be used as it increases algae growth and it decomposes very rapidly which may cause a deoxygenating of the water. Barley straw will not kill existing algae, it is not a pesticide. Rather it creates a unique pond environment which discourages any unwanted growth while not harming any plant or animal habitants.

Advertise free pond goldfish in the paper and I'm sure you will get takers. Also, your water is getting gunky because you do have way too many fish for that size of pond. A good rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water per inch of fish.

Get the Turbo Twist UV light.
Highly recommended!
I have tried others, and they are a waste of money.
You will be 100% satisfied with this unit.
Just give it a chance and don't get rid of them just yet.

We had this problem once, and we called the local 'mom & pop' pet store. They were happy to take our extra fish.
