Over the top - please!!!!
Down the back is soooo annoying :-)

Top of the roll. More sanitary. if its touching the wall, so are peoples fingers, leaving behind germs to pass to the next person that touches the toilet paper touching the wall or the wall itself.

Well, the TP makers have decided that over the top is the correct way. Thats why they print designs so they only show when installed this way. If you have a furnace register under the holder, the paper is more likely to unroll when the air starts flowing though (been there, done that).

TP used to come with patterns. The patterns indicate the intended use was from the top. Personally I think it matters how much room you have in your bathroom. Mine is very cramped. Next to the wall keeps me from shoving it in my eye trying to get it off.
