Alright so I found this wireless router at good will and purchased it. I was wondering if I used it, the previous user could somehow figure out I was using it and find out my identity?

As long as you do a reset back to factory defaults, the only thing they would know is the MAC address, and that won't help them in any way.

Please be sure to use some type of encryption(security) that requires a Network Key. I see so many open wireless that can be messed with or used for nefarious purposes.

Also had to say GREAT AVATAR! Undertow is one of my fav albums!

On the back of the router you'll find a tiny, inset button. That's the reset button you use to reset the router to factory settings. Hold it in for a few seconds with a pen or pencil tip and it should reset your router to the factory defaults, eliminating any settings left over from the previous user.

Not really.

As long as you do a hard reset, then the information by which they could track it is erased.

If the last user gave the router an very unique SSID such as "trackthisrouter123454321" and you just plugged it in and let it go... the person could then spent enough time walking around and searching for that connection... then i guess that person could find the general area where you were... but all that isn't realistic.

Highly unlikely.

Go to the web site for the router vendor, find the PDF for the manual. Figure out how to reset the unit back to factory defaults, then start over.

You run that risk when you go wireless anyway.
