Depends on the make and model. HP laptops are notorious for poor battery performance.
Also depends on how you have set it up. Do you have the battery option enabled? Go to control panel, Power Options and choose "Max Battery"
Do you have a screen saver running? if so get rid of it, as they are no longer required and use precious power by making your laptop work when it could be in standby.
Also try turning down the screen brightness, as this drains power. You might have some power saving options to reduce this when on battery and increase when on mains. if you have, turn it on.
If you are working hard on it for the full hour it is quite possible that it might not last long. 1 hour is at the low end but i have had Sony and dell laptops in the past which did not last longer than 1hr 30m.

it depends on the laptop and battery type. To keep batteries from loosing capacity try to store them at 40% charge, and cool temperatures. when using you laptop plugged in for long periods of time remove the battery preferably with 40% charge. To extend the computing time dim your screen, turn off wireless, dont use cd/dvd drive. If your battery has bit the dust and no longer holds much of a charge you can get a new one or you can take it apart and add new cells, if you know how to solder, you can google to find a tutorial on rebuilding batteries.

if you've had the computer for a while the amount of charge the battery holds gradually decreases.and depending on what you do, for example if your using the CD drive or watching DVDs it'll drain the battery. But if you leave the laptop on the charger when your not using it the battery won't hold much charge either. the best way to conserve rechargeable batteries is to let the power run to zero before charging it.

Sounds like a very short life, but depends what is running while in battery mode.
Batteries don't hold a charge very well especially if they are constantly on charge in the laptop.
I know that my battery no longer holds a charge because I left it in laptop while running on electricity, have now got to get a new one, such is life.

You have either a bad battery, Complain to the maker, or you have stressed the poor thing out, tut-tut, My dad had the same problem, but it wouldnt last 3 minutes, feel kinda lucky. If its an Acer like My Dads new one, they have requested some faulty batterys back, well Sony have. Good Luck anyway.

It's normally 2 hours at the most for a laptop but it does depend on what battery it holds.

No that doesn't seem right, but then it also depends on what your doing. Wireless network adapters & CD/DVD drives can suck the life out of a battery if your using those.
