In astronomy and astrology, a belt around the heavens extending 9° on either side of the ecliptic, the plane of the earth's orbit and of the sun's apparent annual path. The orbits of the moon and of the principal planets also lie entirely within the zodiac. The 12 astrological signs of the zodiac are each considered to occupy 1/12 (or 30°) of its great circle.

If you could observe the motion of the Sun against the stars for an entire year, it would appear to trace out a large circle in the sky that we call the "ecliptic". This circle also happens to be the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. The zodiac is a thin band of the sky on either side of the ecliptic. The word "zodiac" literally means "circle of life", since most of the zodiac signs are animals or people. The zodiac is divided into 12 signs, each 30 degrees long. The cycle of zodiac signs starts with Aries, which begins at the spot on the ecliptic where the Sun is on the first day of spring. These 30 degree sections of the sky are actually blocks of space, not time.

Zodiac signs are often confused in the popular mind with "sun signs". When a person says, "I'm an Aries!", what they're really saying is they were born at a time of the year when the Sun is in the zodiac sign of Aries. Because our calendar is designed to mimic the motions of the Sun around the zodiac, the Sun is in Aries at nearly the same time period each year (roughly March 20th or 21st to April 19th or 20th). Hence the 12 sun signs are like months of a calendar based on the zodiac. They represent time, not space.

I think it means basically what sign what you were born under. I don't have much knowledge of astronomy or astrology, but it has something to do with the way the stars are aligned when you are born. There are twelve of these signs in a year I would guess as there are twelve zodiac signs. Which ever sign you are born under (I think the astronomy part-the actual study of space ) some people say it might influence how your personality turns out (I think the astrology part-the 'psuedo-science of the two).

The zodiac refers to circular pattern of constellations in the sky, each of which was prominent during a certain time of the year. The sun, moon, and other planets moved through the sky around the background of these constellations. Ancient peoples--such as the ancient Babylonians--thought that events in the sky mirrored or had some effect on everyday life. Astrology and mysticism related to what the stars and planets were doing arose.

A person's zodiac (or astrological) sign typically refers to where the sun was in relation to the zodiac at the time a person was born. A persons astrological natal chart (natal horoscope) plots where the sun, moon, and other planets were in the zodiac during a persons birth. Predictions are made based on the patterns.
