Where is a good store (or online) to get cheap felting wool and needles? And where are there free project ideas and patterns online? I'm not talking about knitting and then wetting. I'm talking about with wool and making animals and other 3-D figures.

Starred your question--I'm also hoping to start this particular craft and have no idea where to find stuff. I did a little preliminary searching (I'd do more, but it's 12am and I have to be to work at 8 am and sleep is my friend). I found roving wool at JoAnn's, and I found needles and the like at Hobby Lobby--it looked like they also had wool. This was online, so I'm not sure if the brick and mortar stores will have it as well.
Hope we both enjoy felting--I've seen it done and it looks sooo cool.

your best bet is Ebay. Most of the wool on there is good for dry felting with the felting needles. The needles won't be cheap, nor should they be. Always get the best quality "hardware" for your crafts available. Try this connection for your felting needles and the better wools. http://www.applehollow.com/

You can get roving (aka unspun wool) at sheep & wool festivals. Here's a list from 2006, but the links will take you to the current info:
