He always kept his composure. Never showboated. He was extremely versatile and durable. Had a great relationship with the media. Very polite and articulate. Always dressed to the nines. And, his #s speak for themself. And all this for a Jets team that ranged from terrible to near great.

I'm a Bills fan living in Jets/Giants territory, but this guy always impressed me. The man deserves much more attention and respect than he's received, in my opinion.

Any other pure football fans feel the same way?

Not taking anything away from BS. He played behind Thurman his frosh and soph year because Thurman was in his junior and senior years. No surprise there, especially since Thurman was no slouch. Curtis was a (the) star at Pitt, but so what? This question wasn't about dark-horse players that come from nowhere and become big stars. But Barry got tons of press (deservedly), was always #1 fantasy pick. The way he retired was very controversial.

Thomas and Faulk played for more years on superior teams than Curtis Martin did. He always made the Jets look good, not vice versa.

This wasn't about being the best RB of modern times, it was about being the classiest/most under-rated.

very well put. Unfortunetly a lot of people outside of new york, really dont know how great curtis martin was. he went to work for the green machine for 11years and pounded the rock for enough yards to give him 6th all time (most underated rusher of all time). you ask anyone outside of new york name the top ten rushers of all time and i guarantee you the one name they forget is curtis martin. i am glad someone else on here appreciates his career as much as i do.

I never thought of Curtis Martin as a great running back. He was definitely a class act throughout his NFL career and an above average back.

On the field he was always a poor mans Thurman Thomas or Marshal Faulk. He could do it all, but he was never a great rusher. Just my two cents but I saw him play all the time.

The Patriots, Dolphins, Jets, Colts, and Bills were my favorite division. Now the Colts are elsewhere and the Patriots are the two best teams. Before they just use to beat each other up during the year.

Yes I totally agree as a hardcore jets fan whos favorite all time player is curtis martin. Martin was seriously a class act and it always made me sad when he got hurt and couldnt play these past few years. It was awesome how he came back in 2005 after being hurt in 2004 and won the rushing title over Shaun Alexander ... truly an amazing feat by him. Its too bad last years injury has forced him to retire. First ballot hall of famer ... no freakin doubt.

great player and a classy guy for sure, my only problem with it ishe was a star for pitt in college so he had credentials coming in, I remember well, but barry sanders sat behind thurman thomas I believe in collegewas the most amazing back ever for a overall poor lions team except 1 or 2 years was stopped behind the the line for more yards than any player in history is still 2nd all time retired in his prime and was as respectable, humble, soft spoken and polite of any man ever what the lions did to barry is like al davis to marcus allen, I wished either could had the work mr martin so ably did 300 + rushes per season 4 mr martin was a man on the field and a total class act but not the only class act

He was a very good back and kept his role very modest. I agree he is very under rated. More players should be like Curtis Martin and Robert Smith and Emit Smith and Walter Payton.......
