("10% water" * "6 existing cups" + "100% water" * "unknown # of cups") / ("6 existing cups" + "unknown # of cups") = "60% water"

In other words

(0.1*6+1*X)/(6+X)=0.6 X=7.5

It would take 7.5 cups of water to bring your solution to 40% acid.
