I recently had to ship off my 360 for repair (I had the 3 flashing red lights). I just received a new 360 back from Microsoft. What can I do to decrease the chance of another hardware failure?

Keep the vents free from dust and debris which causes it to run hotter and can overheat the system. Make sure your disk are clean when you put them in the system. Dont turn off system with switch when quitting a game close it out by leaving the game and shutting down correctly.

Keep the 360 in a well ventilated area. I have a day one 360 and have not had any problems playing it for long periods of time.
I can't go to that link someone put above regarding a "cooling pack," but don't get the Nyko Intercooler. It does more harm to the 360 than it does good. I've had friends' 360s have problems after using that and Microsoft won't help them. Just keep the 360 in an open space. Don't put games along side it or anything that restricts air flow. DO NOT use it VERTICALLY. For one, this makes the disc drive work harder and it cuts off that entire side vent.

dust it off from time to time and make sure it has plenty of airflow, and pray that it lasts.

My brother has already shipped a 360 back 3-4 times. His keeps on breaking, so they fix or replace it.
