I have a 1975 Johnson 6hp and am thinking of a 12 or 14 foot aluminum v-hull. Will the little 6 be enough to get either on a plane? Also if anybody in the Orlando area has one for sale I'm definitely in the market.
Thanks

A 6 HP O/B & boat will be displacement rather than planing design. The hull will simply push a wave in front that will go alongside the boat when it reaches a certain height & thus fill in the void behind the boat.
12 or 14 will work fine
Happy boating.

The shorter the boat the harder to plane off.

Hello,
I have that exact combo you are asking about. I have a 6hp on a 14 foot v-hull alum boat and it will push you around fine but with all my gear and a 50 lb thrust trolling mtr and battery it will NOT plane... I did though change props to an 8x7 and that did help bring the front end up so I could cross heavy wake...
I like my set up............. Good luck fishing !!

6HP isn't much better than an electric trolling motor for speed. I would sell that 6HP to someone that wants an emergency kicker for an IB/OB. Then buy a 12 or 14 foot boat and put a 15HP on it.

I have an 8 hp and with just me it will plane my 12'. I dont think a 6 would to it. Maybe if it was a very light hull and you dont weigh much.
If you are wanting to plane, you should look to a minimum of 10 hp and probably 15 if you are wanting to go with two people.
That is a great little motor, you should be able to sell it or trade it to someone.
