It depends on the model.

The 220D and SD had an 84bhp (86PS) version of the Rover L-series turbodiesel engine.
The 220Di and SDi added an intercooler and electronic injector-pump control to the same engine to take power up to 103bhp (105PS).

You can tell the intercooled engine from outside - you can see the intercooler through the lower air intake in the front bumper, at the left-side of the car (right side if viewed from the front). Under the bonnet, the pipes (black, about 2.5inch diameter) to the intercooler are clear to see where they come out from the front corner of the engine cover, while the other clue is the throttle potentiometer (for the electronic injector pump) at the end of the throttle cable mounted half way down the inner wing on the driver's side.

89-96 88 bhp.
96 on with the e 84 bhp. Example Tde.
96 on with no e 104 bhp. Example Tdi.
