Their democratic elected Government assuming complete control. We will be out of there within a year, whether they are ready or not. The libs will claim victory, but, alas, it is already in the works, and you heard it here first. I will remind the liberals later.

The end to the Iraq war will come in a manner different than it should. The "should" is where we unplug from a power grid, powering our buildings with wind/solar/hydroelectricity, reduce our consumption of resources and ideas, and rein in our downward spiraling culture - changing it to respect individuals above groups/entities, and paying people less to WRITE laws and more to ENFORCE them.

WE, as individuals, need to make these choices by ourselves, and stop supporting the two party, zombie enforcement system that we have created to curb our own growth as citizens of what used to be by FAR the best nation on earth. Now, we're just BARELY the best nation on earth.

We are at war because our way of life was threatened, because we zombies need brains...er... oil, because women in Iraq aren't educated, because there WERE WMDs in Iraq - even though the media says that's the only reason, because our intelligence is politically "enhanced" BY BOTH PARTIES, and because we were already in the area, generally, and figured, "why not?"

I guess we could use any excuse you listed above to end the war, or wait for a neutral third party to bop us on the head with a white flag. It doesn't matter, the groups that dominate this country - even ones claiming minority status, have too much power.

If empowered individuals took over, we could stop the war whenever we felt like it - but there will be consequences long term for whatever happens - lives lost, resources used, economy drained (again), and a lot of time wasted while we figure out who to point fingers at.

Then,

We were told that if we did not win in Viet Nam, that the communists would over run the world. What happened was the communists overran Viet Nam, made a total mess of things, wised up, and abandoned communism.

If we leave Iraq, they will probably be overrun by fudamentalist yahoos. This happened in Iran in 1979. Even though they are still in power, the Iranian people are resistant to strict religious control. I think we may be better off leaving them to learn their own lessons the hard way.

It will involve us learning to do with less oil. We CAN do it. we just need the will.

If it were attainable, the plausible end would be a functioning Iraqi government who no longer needs our presence to control the population.

Given the tensions there between ethnicities, I don't think it's attainable at the present troop strength, and we are hamstrung by other commitments world-wide.

So it is in essence unattainable, and maybe therefore not plausible as a result. It leaves the only other option as plausible (to me), which is to pull out and let them take the civil war that is already underway to its natural conclusion - cruel as that may seem. I don't want to see my nephew who is over there come home in a box because of someone else's civil war.

My OPINION is that we stop the door to door looks and force the Iraqi soldiers to do it and have training base's that we can train their police and military at. Iraq must grow up sooner or later. As far as the conflict is concerned there will always be a conflict between religious groups weather it be in Iraq or another Mid East country.

When the Iraqi government is strong enough to control it's own borders and defeat the insurgents.
Pulling out anytime before that invites Iran and Syria to send in "PEACEKEEPERS" to restore order ( take over ) and never leave.

I can see two plausible ends:

Congress will end funding or end the war, forcing plans for a withdrawal. At this point Iraq is on its own.

We stay for many years and wear the insurgency / terrorists out until Iraq becomes stabilized.

Brian's answer "defeat the insurgents" is the only way. We can accomplish this by having Ted Kennedy and Michael Moore infiltrate the insurgents. They will eat all of their food and drink all of their booze, leaving them no choice but to give up.

Next year, watch for Michael Moore's new movie about the life of Ted Kennedy. it's called "Drunko"

We get tired of wasting money and lives and we leave. There is a power vacuum and local warlords create havoc and chaos for some time before one comes out on top. You end up with another poor developing country trying to recover from the American occupation and the chaos that it led to.

The Iraq war will not end until the American middle class has been destroyed. The war is a Machiavellian distraction to keep our attention off of the fact that this administration, and congress, are waging war on the middle class in order to implement the North American Union and eventually a single world government.

NO NWO!

Unfortunately, I would predict a defeat of the insurgents followed by withdrawal of our forces followed by elections in which Islamic fundamentalists will go right into power. And the beat goes on.
