Let x = no. hours for the cars to be 320 mi apart.
(50 + 50x) + 40x = 320
50 + 50x + 40x = 320
90x = 320 - 50
90x = 270
x = 270 / 90
x = 3
3:00 PM + 3
Answer: 6:00 P.M.
Proof:
50 + (3 * 50) + (3 * 40) = 320
50 + 150 + 120 = 320
320 = 320

50 + 50t + 40t = 320, where t = time after 3 pm. Then 90t = 270, t = 3, so they will be 320 mi. apart at 6 pm.

at 1 hour those cars will be at 90mi aprt. then 320mi/90mi = 3.55..... so 3.56 times 60 is equal to 213.6 which is also equal to 213.6 minutes
so its 3 hours and 30 minutes (estimately)
so 1400h + 0330h = 1730h which is 5 : 30 pm
so at 5:30 pm the cars will be apart 320mi
