Are you talking about emotional pain? If so, remember this:

"To love is to suffer.
To avoid suffering one must not love.
But then one suffers from not loving.
Therefore, to love is to suffer;
not to love is to suffer;
to suffer is to suffer.
To be happy is to love.
To be happy, then, is to suffer,
but suffering makes one unhappy.
Therefore, to be unhappy,
one must love or love to suffer
or suffer from too much happiness."
--Diane Keaton, Love and Death (1975)

You were programed to not feel pain. Pain is the indicator that something is wrong with the system. Fix it and you will go back to your programming of feeling fine.

In nature, those who could be sensitive to pain could live to fix it, and reproduce. Those who ignored it, died of infection prior to the teen years.

It helped then, but nature didn't "know" that one day people would live to 80, and feel pain long past the age of reproduction.

Another "failure" in Psychology, but it succeeds for the human race!
