I never really got what the big deal was with Zeppelin...until I got a cd of their greatest hits. I liked Stairway to Heaven like everyone else, and thought It would be good to listen to while driving from the Bay Area, CA. to Sacramento to visit friends. I would drive from 12am to like 3am or whatever on shrooms whenever I drive up. Yes, I know that is bad, and I now realize it was a dumb thing to do.

Finally I listened to them on on my trip north, and I must say that "I totally understand them now!". I forget which song it was, but by chance the sun was setting in the same direction I-5 was heading, which made it seem that I was chasing the sun. That lyrics was something about chasing the sun or something and it was this experience that opened mind to them. Now whats the deal with The Grateful Dead.

What are your fave bands to listen to when you're "you know what"? What are your runner ups and why?

Umm, ok, I was wrong. Pink Floyd is probably the best although I haven't tried listening to them while on shrooms. To set the record straight, this was just a phase. Overall I've only shroomed like five times total and only enough to make the oncoming car lights "dance". Anyways, looking back, if I did listen to Pink Floyd while driving on shrooms, I would have prolly been in trouble, and a complete threat to others'...i mean garanteed. Shoot, you don't have to be on anything to fall into a trance and zone out. I love "Learning to Fly". I hear though that trying to watch The Wall while trippin' is pretty harsh, and all over the place/random.

Did Pink Floyd make their music for trippin out from the start? Or was their following/fanbase a surpirse side effect to their musical style?

C'mon! Zeppelin is arguably the greatest band ever, but PINK FLOYD was made for the "altered state" with King Crimson coming in second.

I'll throw a curve in here and go vintage-modern and say, George Clinton and the Parliament/Funkadelic (as a live show, and the album T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M)
Whats the deal with the Grateful Dead? Mostly the deal is you need a little patience. There has never been a band less concerned with being "rock stars" so it is something of a culture shift to listen to them. I don't know of a more classic psychedelic sound than a good juicy "Dark Star".
Floyd, yes, a gentle trip really, I just find them to be a little too lethargic at times.

That's how I felt the first time I saw Dylan and was "you know whating". I totally understood- and still feel as if I do.

I would choose a good Dead live show (really, any would do), as they have the groove, the lyrics and they don't get in your ear and over do things. It makes a great backdrop to a great trip.

Or why does everyone overlook the Beatles in this category? From Revolver on is great. I listened to Abbey Road not too long ago, and I was taking a trip- I heard it with new ears.

I am a die-hard Zep Head but I have to say that Pink Floyd is the best music to listen to when in that special state of mind that you are talking about. I would say that Zappa would probably run a close second.

led zeppelin may be the best band ever, but, PINK FLOYD!!!
god, their albums are mind blowing in an un-altered state. especially with laser rock. those things are ******* sweet (and you end up, uhh, altered without meaning to be-the only time that will ever happen in a science museum)

but zeppelin, jimi hendrix, the dead, and slayer (dont ask, just good) are all pretty good too

if you want to up it a notch to a present day recording.. check out the new album last year from David Gilmour.. he's the guitarist from floyd and it's just as heady as the older stuff, but you won't be listening to the same old stuff

Here are the three that would work if I was cratered:
1. Pink Floyd
2. Doors (The Unknown Soldier - need I say more!)
3. Rush (in their late-70's "prog" period)

You were just drving somewhere, i wouldn't call that an "altered state". I like listening to the Pixies while i am drunk (is that what you mean by "you know what"? Drunk or high on some drug, you have not made it very clear).
