For better and efficient downloading of larger files, u can use a a download manager like Orbit or flashget...These use optimum use of the available bandwidth, which can be changed under the settings in the program...
If u r downloading from torrent sites, it depends on users who are seeding it..Also the speed of ur net connection too plays a role in t time taken...

flashget.com.

Do rate if it helped..

Your download speed will vary a bit based on network load but the real problem is probably related to your friends upload speed. Most ISPs provide a faster download than upload capability, primarily because most people download information rather than uploading it. Most content providers are paying a premium fee for commercial Internet connections that offer different capabilities than a typical home user.

Given the file size and the amount of time involved, I'd consider breaking the file up and sending chunks of it over rather than one large file. I'd hate to get 95% through the transfer to only experience a network glitch that causes you to have to restart the whole process.

Another option would be to have your friend seed a P2P network with copies of the content. If they have several neighbors/friends that are local, they can easily walk copies to the individual networks and you could then download multiple streams. Of course if this is a copyright infringement situation, you shouldn't be copying it anyways but doing it on a P2P network would certainly add a risk of being caught for illegal file sharing.

There are many download softwares that boast to give to give about 500% increase in speed. They are really bogus. Try

FlashGet from http://www.flashget.com/index_en.htm

It integrates directly with IE and if u are a Ferefox user like me there's a extension for u.It is also a very good torrent client. It's really the best. You can pause & resume downloads.

You are probably downloading as fast as you are going to be able to. If you want faster download speeds you should check with local internet services providers in your area to see who has the best service. Cable internet is probably the way to go, depending on the provider.
